The curious case of dr jekyll and mr hyde?

for my semester paper, im am writing about gothic literature. does anyone know of any outside influences that would affect stevensons writing? many websites talk about his nurse and reading the old testament, but im looking more for something that would cause him to write a gothic novel. thanks
