What can I use to gently clean sticky substance from shutter curtain of my SLR film camera?

Canon Rebels evidently have something inside that goes bad and leaves a gummy type of substance on the shutter curtain. Can safely (and gently) clean it with rubbing alcohol and q-tips? I know that too much pressure will ruin the curtain, but there must be some way.
