Endorsements in drivers license?

Most states have endorsements to show what kinds of vehicles you can drive. For instance if you have a motorcycle endorsement you can legally drive motorcycles. A commercial drivers license can have from one to several endorsements (air brakes, tanker, Hazmat). I guess this just keeps the DMV from having to issue several different licenses for each vehicle you are qualified to drive.
