Widely used as preservative formula C2H2O2...Identify this compound. (CBSE 2007 HOTS)?

If it is acetic(ethanoic) acid, then it is C2H4O2....but if CBSE X asks then it can't be anything else....so, any answers to this? Or, is the question wrong? plz help, someone..
